Key Stage 1
Primary 3 and 4
St. Gerard's Key Stage 1 curriculum builds upon the skills and concepts previously learnt in the Foundation Stage.
The children are assessed in September to establish starting points and individual targets for each child across the curriculum.
A multi-sensory approach to learning is maintained in order to cater to the individual child's strengths and learning style. Each child's progress is regularly monitored and assessed, so that further meaningful and attainable targets can be set and achieved. In Key Stage 1 a more formalised approach to literacy and numeracy is introduced in accordance with the developmental stage of the child. All lessons are delivered through multi-sensory and sequential approach which allow for embedding and progression.
Whilst play is still an important element of the curriculum, the emphasis is on activity based learning through curricular topics. This approach encourages the development of personal capabilities and thinking skills.
In Primary 3, pupils receive the sacrament of Reconciliation. In Primary 4, pupils then receive the sacrament of First Holy Communion. Father Fergal McGrady from the parish of St. Anne's is our school Chaplin. Both occasions are celebrated in school and are very special occasions.
